Landscape with Harrow in the Background (circa 1865), by Thomas Creswick, RA (1811–69). Oil on canvas. Wednesbury Museum and Art Gallery, UK.
This fine landscape is one of many images of the Home Counties in which the artist explores the mild scenes of the south of the England, forming a strong contrast with his paintings of rugged Welsh mountains and valleys. This work is very much a depiction of the English idyll.
This composition is radically different from the enclosed bowers of Creswick's earlier work, representing an expansive space. It also represents the lighter, brighter palette of his later paintings.
