Balmae, an area of Kircudbrightshire, is known for its beautiful scenery — coastal paths along the bay, Balmae Lake and Burn, and woodlands. Here, Sir Charles leads his new wife on a white mount as they follow a coastal path, picking their way quite slowly along a rough surface with stony outcrops, right by the water. The rest of the party follow behind, one (perhaps Jemima herself, alongside Lady Katherine Douglas) on a smaller pony, and a third not yet in view — only the horse's head, apparently coming down to the path from higher up. The women ride sidesaddle, in a seemly procession. — Jacqueline Banerjee
