Note 1 for Appendix II to the author's Swinburne's Medievalism: A Study in Victorian Love Poetry which Louisiana State University Press published in 1979. It has been included in the Victorian web with the kind permission of the author, who of course retains copyright.
Such essays are to be found both in the Ashley collection and elsewhere. Ashley manuscript 4349 contains brief essays with the following titles: "Source of Greek History"; "On Deductive and Inductive Reasoning": "Of Analogy"; "Origin of Moral Ideas"; "The Period of Mythical Philosophy"; "The Constitutional Influence of Small Republics"; "Use of Logic"; "Analogy of the Arts and Virtues"; "lnfluence of Greek Philosophy at Rome in the Time of Cicero"; and "Consciousness." All these essays are between three and five pages long. In the Eton College Library are two unpublished college essays donated by T. J. Wise on December l0,1924. One, in Latin, is entitled "De Morte Mariie Scotorum Regina" (On the death of Mary Queen of Scots), and the other, "On the Character of Mahomet." Both are brief. Finally, in the library of Worcester College at Oxford are the essays edited by Ed Schuldt that appeared as "Three Unpublished salliol Essays of A. C. Swinburne" in Review of English Studies, XXVII (1976).
