Victorian medievalism as the borderline between romance and history

Anthony H. Harrison, Professor of English, North Carolina State University

Note 5 to Chapter 1 of the author's Swinburne's Medievalism, which xx University Press published in a 19xx. It has been included in the Victorian web with the kind permission of the author, who of course retains copyright.

This is the thrust of Mark Girouard's argument throughout The Return to Camelot. His commentary (p. 8) on the Victorians' chivalric idealization of Sir John Franklin's failed polar expedition is telling in a tangential way, especially since it was, coincidentally, the topic of the "first poem in which Swinburne struck a really original style," according to Georges Lafourcade (Swinburne: A Literary Biography [New York, 1932], 76).
