Christ in the Carpenter's Shop; Christ and the Doctors

John Hardman & Co

1861

First window in the north aisle, St Matthias, Richmond

This is one of a series in the north aisle depicting well-known episodes in the early life of Jesus. (According to Robert Eberhard, another depicts the angel appearing to Zacharias, and the Annunciation). The scenes are busy and evocative, with a real sense of a carpenter's workshop in the lefthand one, and, in the other one, of elders listening intently, under three brightly lit lamps, to the young boy's discourse.
