The The Grave of William Makepeace Thackeray, Kensal Green Cemetery, London

The Grave of William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-63) The plain stone slab surrounded by a low rusted railing is now difficult to read. Nearly 2,000 mourners gathered at the cemetery for the burial, including such famous writers as Dickens (who stayed behind as the earth was filled in), Trollope and Browning, and many "ordinary people" (see Taylor). Photograph and text by Jacqueline Banerjee, 2006.
