Hampstead Heath.... covers 250 acres, though the surrounding open spaces bring the total area of public land to over 800. It is undoubtedly London's finest lung, a wild upland expanse of grassy slopes, birch woods, gorse, bracken, ponds, and avenues of limes. On summer Bank Holidays it becomes the playground of London, someties attracting a hundred thousand people. [Mee 717]
It has been claimed that the heath is "the largest open space within the boundary of any of the world's capitals" and perhaps it is. [Weinreb et al. 376]
