When icicles hang by the wall
Paul Woodroffe
Photomechanical reproduction of pen and ink drawing.
5½ x 4 inches
Songs from the Plays of Shakespeare , facing p. 52.
Woodroffe’s treatment of the song in Love’s Labour’s Lost. Dick the shepherd is shown blowing his hands and seems paralysed; Woodroffe chooses not to show ‘greasy Joan’ and the cheerful owl, but focuses on the intensity of the English winter in a period of exceptional coldness. Shakespeare’s verse is not idealised and the same is true of the illustration.
