Come and Go
William Holman Hunt
1862
Wood engraving by the Dalziel Brothers
5½ x 4¼ inches
Illustration for Good Words (1862), p.32.
An illustration to an anonymous didactic poem about the need for fortitude, hard work and belief in God. Holman Hunt’s depiction of the primary character is more ambiguous than the pious type implied in the lines. This illustration could easily be treated in oil, and recalls his paintings representing the Old and New Testaments.
