Offering Incense

Simeon Solomon

Wood engraving by the Dalziels [1862].

6¼ x 4¾ inches

Alex Foley, Art Pictures from the Old Testament, p.89.

Exodus, xxx: 7. Aaron preparing incense for the morning sacrifice. Another of Solomon’s designs showing offerings. The elegant figures recall the neo-classical imagery of Frederick Leighton and Albert Moore, although Solomon always differentiates his characters’ faces and new allows them to become abstract representations of ‘beauty’ in the manner of Aestheticism.
