Herkomer opened his art school at The Cloisters, Bushey in 1883. He was a great believer in hard work and proud of being able to turn his hand to any task, including the invention of his own engraving process. Sambourne pokes fun at him with the label ‘Made by Myself’ tied to a new broom and comments on the strictness with which he controlled his students, drawing a book of Rules poking out of Herkomer’s pocket and a notice behind the group of young people which reads, ‘No one to sit or stand.’ The reference to Thomas Barlow, a successful engraver of other artists’ work, may be a dig at people who make money off the back of someone else’s talent.
