Lionel and Lucy Tempest
Charles Keene
6 September 1862
Wood engraving by Joseph Swain.
5 x 4 inches
Sixth illustration for Mrs Henry Wood’s Verner’s Pride. in Once a Week 7 (6 September 1862): 295.
Though innovative in his use of mid-Victorian naturalism, Keene also uses some of the standard iconographies of book illustration, an approach typified here by the use of the basic unit of two characters engaged in conversation.
One of the few images of direct conflict in Keene’s series.
