Christiana Hammond

Photomechanical reproduction of pen and ink drawing.

5½ x 4 x inches

George Saintsbury, ed. Marmontel’s Moral Tales, frontispiece.

A pictorial frontispiece which shows Mamma reading to an apparently recalcitrant daughter, clearly uninterested in moral tales of any sort. The elaborate décor and costumes from the late eighteenth century typify Hammond’s fascination with Regency rococo, although once again her characterization, at least in the depiction of the teenager, links to the Aesthetic ‘look’ of the 1890s.
