The Harper and Brothers Household Edition was 16 volumes (instead of 22, as in the case with the Chapman and Hall production), and came out between 1872 and 1877. Those volumes that were illustrated by American artists, and were therefore protected by American copyright, are as follows:

• The Old Curiosity Shop by Thomas Worth;
• Dombey and Son by W. L. Sheppard;
• Nicholas Nickleby by C. S. Reinhart;
• Pickwick Papers by Thomas Nast;
• Christmas Stories by E. A. Abbey;
• Hard Times by C. S. Reinhart;
• Pictures from Italy and American Notes by Thomas Nast.

Frederic G. Kitton adds that Reinhart illustrated the American printing of The Uncommercial Traveller, that A. B. Frost did Sketches by Boz, and that E. A. Abbey Christmas Stories.

In the case of Sketches by Boz, Chapman and Hall commissioned their lead illustrator, Fred Barnard, to provide 34 illustrations, including two full-page illustrations, in the 1876 volume of 240 pages. In contrast, Harper and Brothers of New York commissioned a relative newcomer, Arthur B. Frost, to provide 28 illustrations, including one full-page illustration, in the 1877 volume of 383 pages. Whereas the Chapman and Hall volume contains just the one title, the American version also contains Nast's nineteen illustrations for Pictures from Italy and fourteen illustrations for American Notes. The covers, however, are virtually identical — and bear no relationship to the content, with gold-stamped figures of Samuel Pickwick, Seth Pecksniff, Whackford Squeers, and Captain Cuttle. The versos of each are different, however, with the initials "H&B" on the American edition, but an ornate, symmetrical paisley design on the back of the Chapman and Hall edition.
