The forge on deck. Artist: Robert Dudley. Drawn and lithographed by Dudley, with assistance from Day's technicians. Chromolithograph. 10 ½ x 16 ½ inches. An illustration for W. H. Russell's The Atlantic Telegraph (London: Day, 1866), p.68.

A powerful image of the ship as manufactory, driven forward by labour that toils around the clock. As usual, there is a pointed contrast between the middle-class men who observe, and the workmen who do the physical graft.
