‘The Eglinton Tournament’ (plate 3), 1840. A lithographic print, drawn by Doyle directly onto the stone. 10¼ x 14½ inches. The subject here is practice for the joust; typically, the emphasis is on the incongruous mismatch between the participants’ haughty expressions and the absurdity of the event. The caricature target adds another layer of mockery.
