Newcome vs Newcome

Newcome vs Newcome

Richard Doyle

Steel engraving by an unknown engraver

8¼ x 5¼ inches

W. M. Thackeray,The Newcomes, II, facing 284.

A particularly chaotic urban scene which reflects Doyle's life-long fascination with the tumult of Victorian street-life. It represents a marked contrast with the many illustrations of interiors and helps to broaden the text's engagement with contemporary life, as well as reflecting on the disorder associated with the development of British deomocracy.
