Copping sets the keynote for his character studies of Dickens's most attractive child characters with a head-and-shoulders portrait of Edwardian readers' sentimental favourite, Little Nell from The Old Curiosity Shop, serialised in Master Humphrey's Clock (1840-41). [Commentary continued below.]
