‘A great she bear, coming down the street .. ,’ 1885. Wood engraving by Edmund Evans of a watercolour. 6 ¼ x 7 ¼ inches. An illustration in The Great Panjandrum Himself, 6. Another of Caldecott’s bizarre scenes, with an anthropomorphized bear, dressed in the costume of the early nineteenth century, walking through a village street in Regency England. The character adds nothing to the story but seems to have been included purely to amuse the very young; the other characters in the scene look on in astonishment, but show no fear.
