‘The Fall,’ 1884. Wood engraving by Edmund Evans of a watercolour. 6 ¼ x 7 ¼ inches. An illustration in Ride a-Cock Horse to Banbury Cross, 18. This is the fourth in a sequence of 10 scenes in a montage telling the story of the Farmer and represents the fall. Caldecott conveys the Farmer’s pain by focusing on his facial expression; the detail of the Daughter’s basket, with its broken eggs, adds another dramatic touch.
