Commentary

The second of the two 1906 volumes contains six illustrations, and Chapters 28 through 55 (pp. 1-359). The vignette depicts the exterior of Wyards, a farmhouse near Chawton in Hampshire. Here, Austen's niece, Anna Lefroy, lived after marrying Ben Lefroy in 1815. Austen lived nearby, at Chawton Cottage. The farmhouse, the principal residence on the property, built about 1500 A. D., at the time was owned by Jane's brother Edward.

Mrs. Elton was evidently wanting to be complimented herself — and it was, "How do you like my gown?" (p. 122)
Taking out her purse, she gave them a shilling, and begged them not to want more. (p. 137)
"Most beloved Emma — tell me at once, say, 'No' if it is to be said." (p. 279)
I was mad enough, however, to resent. I doubted her affection." (p. 295)
Poor man! — it was at first a considerable shock to him. (p. 332)
