Commentary

The first of the two 1906 volumes contains a brief preface (vii-viii), six illustrations, and Chapters 1 through 27 (pp. 1-339). The vignette depicts a room in Jane Austen's actual home in Hampshire. Here, in this cosy parlour, Austen likely wrote and revised all six of her novels at the small walnut table, shown here immediately in front of the hearth. Today the parlour is the most prominent room in the Jane Austen Museum. However, the setting of Emma (1815) is not the seventeenth-century Austen parsonage in Hampshire, but the Woodhouses' substantial mansion in Surrey.
