An illustration for John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress [1890], 203.

Brewtnall focuses on poverty-stricken characters who could easily be the poor of the nineteenth century, and reproduces the dark imagery of The Graphic. The style here is practically an imitation of William Small, perhaps to harmonize with the rest of the illustrations, which are done by Small.
