Plate 57. This is the scene in Esther 7, where Haman appeals for the Queen’s mercy having been plotting against the Jews, but is thought by the King Ahasuerus (in background) to be in the process of making a sexual approach to his wife. Brewtnall focuses on the ambiguity of the situation: Haman is crouched in the manner of a suitor, but his clutching at her cushion suggests despair and her raised arm is both angry and imperious.
