This is EVB's first book, and essentially an apprentice piece. The compositions of children set in idyllic landscapes are romantic and sentimental, but the drawing is often clumsy and confused. The mode of printing (anastatic lithography) recreates her febrile draughtsmanship. [Commentary continues below.]
