‘John’s breeches,’ 1889. 7 x 10¼ inches. Unnumbered plate Hunting in Hard Times. Chromolithographic reproduction of Bowers’s watercolours. A series of five vignettes showing misadventures of the chase: Miss J’s hair comes down in the rain; looking for a place to cross only ends up in a ditch; John is stuck in some briars; and later rues the thorns’ destruction of his breeches. Domestic life and the hunt are freely intermingled.
