Edward Burne-Jones

Steel etching by an unknown etcher

5½ x 3¾ inches

Archibald Maclaren, The Fairy Family (1857).

This image is a reworking of a familiar trope in Victorian painting and illustration, which shows a sleeper surrounded by the dream-projections of his or her imagination. The rustic lettering and cramped composition is heavily influenced by the art of Richard Doyle.
