An expensive volume entitled A Series of Character Sketches from Dickens, from Original Drawings by Frederick Barnard was executed initially in large-scale chromolithograph, and later reproduced in much cheaper photogravure. In 1884, Cassell and Company, London, issued two large-format hardbound portfolios, each with its own title page, and six large colour reproductions in each. The plates in these portfolios are as follows — (1884, Series 1): Mr. Pecksniff; Mr. Pegotty, Rogue Riderhood; Little Nell and her Grandfather; The Two Wellers; Caleb Plummer and His Blind Daughter; (1884, Series 2): Mr. Micawber; Captain Cuttle; Betsy Trotwood; Dick Swiveller and The Marchioness; Uriah Heep; and Bob Cratchit and Tiny Tim. There was one further series of six plates, composed in 1885 and issued in 1887. Each of these plates is complete in and of itself, and relies on no mediating text, although each of the colour plates faces a relevant passage from each novel which describes the character physically. Each colour illustration measures approximately 10 ½ inches high by 7 ½ inches wide. However, the photogravure reproductions are somewhat smaller: typically, 7 ½ inches high by 5 inches wide.
