1911

32 1/2 inches (82.5 cm)

Sycamore lacquered black

In 1911 Mackintosh was commissioned by Catherine Cranston to renovate the rooms at her Ingram Street Tea Rooms in Glasgow. He chose a Chinese theme and the room was covered with lattice work panels, alternately filled with leaded glass, which supported an overhead horizontal lattice work spanning the width of the room. The chairs designed for the room were lacquered black and Mackintosh derived his inspiration from eighteenth century Chinoiserie furniture. Thirty six chairs were made; thirty are now in public collections, three with The Fine Art Society and three remain untraced.
