Sideboard

Philip Webb

80 inches (204.5 cm) x 79 3/4 inches (202.5 cm.) x 25 inches (63.5 cm)

Ebonised and painted wood, with inset panels of embossed and stained leather

"This sideboard is similar to the one owned by F. R. Leyland, shown in the dining-room (the 'Peacock' room) of his house at 49 Princes Gate in photographs taken in 1892 by Bedford, Lemere. The two pieces are closely related, but the painted decoration is not identical, though the leather seems to have come from the same source. A version of this design, with entirely painted decoration, appears in the Morris and Company Catalogue, where it is dated 1862" [William Morris and Company, pp. 19-20]
