"Originally copper and brass manufacturers, Benham & Froud developed a range of 'art metal and woodwork' during the 1870s producing designs by a number of designers and supplying Dr Dresser's Art Furnishers Alliance. Dresser sold designs to the company over a period of twenty years. In 1885 Dresser supplied a number of designs for pieces in mixed metals for exhibition. It is likely that this piece is one of these designs. It is related to the jardiniere illustrated in Gere & Whiteway, Nineteenth Century Design: Pugin to Mackintosh, 1993, p.185, and included in the British Crafts Council's touring exhibition, Metalmorphosis, 1999 (cat.14)."
