The composition reproduces almost exactly the ninth panel on Burges' own library bookcase exhibited in the Mediaeval Court of the 1862 Exhibition. The scheme of decoration for the bookcase was entirely devised by Burges, but the individual panels were painted by artist's friends; "Architecture" by Simeon Solomon

The Fine Art Society, London, has most generously given its permission to use information, images, and text from its catalogues in the Victorian Web.
