Cloth binding for ‘The Yellow Book,’ 8

1896

Yellow cloth with heavy blocking

8¼ x 6½ inches

Cameron’s design is heraldic in style, combining a ship and abstracted waves with a unicorn and lion. The outline motifs at the four corners are reminiscent of the Glasgow version of Art Nouveau as practised by C. R. Mackintosh and Herbert McNair and makes a link to another avant-garde school of the period. The effect of the design is somewhat spoiled by damage to the surface in the poor copy shown here.
