Cloth binding for Palgrave’s ‘Five Days Entertainment at Wentworth Grange’

Arthur Hughes

1868

Cloth binding gilt

8 x 6 inches

This is an unsigned binding by Arthur Hughes, with a roundel on the front board and a small circle of stars on the back-strip. Hughes is likely to have designed the lettering as well. Hughes specialized in this sort of intimate imagery of women and children, and the gilt motif prefigures the delightful engravings on wood in the following pages, which illustrate a series of fairy tales.
