Cloth binding
Thomas Robert Macquoid
1858–60
Blue cloth binding with gilt overlays
10¼ x 7¼ inches
This lavish cloth binding is a prime example of Macquoid’s dynamic style. The elaborate gilt blocking is one of the most spectacular of the period, projecting a notion of luxury and good taste – even if it appears excessive to modern observers. The cover is signed in the central panel.
