Aberdeen Railway carriage, about 1880

Aberdeen Railway carriage, about 1880. A group of railway workers posed in front of an obsolete Aberdeen Railway first class carriage number 77, about 1880. Early carriages were made from wood, and were much shorter than modern vehicles. The guard sat in the seat on the roof from where he could apply the brake. Luggage was also carried on the roof. The wheels have been removed from this redundant carriage. It is probably being used as a store or makeshift canteen by a permanent way gang responsible for maintaining track on the Caledonian Railway. The Aberdeen Railway which opened in the 1850s, linked Aberdeen to Forfar. Photograph and text courtesy of the National Railway Museum. [Click on image to enlarge it.]
