Antoine Magnin (1848-1926) was French botanist and a professor on the the medical faculty of the University of Lyon. In 1878 he published Les bactéries, the bacteriological work for which he is remembered. Translated by George Sternberg and published in the US as The Bacteria in 1880, the work became the first textbook of bacteriology in the United States. A revised edition followed in 1884. Between 1881-84, Magnin was director of the Jardin botanique of Lyon. In 1908 he was elected President of Société botanique de France.
