Sandown War Memorial, Esplanade, Isle of Wight. This simple Celtic cross, designed by Percy G Stone, A.R.I.B.A., was unveiled on 25 July 1921 by Queen Victoria's youngest daughter, Princess Beatrice. Adding meaning as well as extra height, its base is made of granite blocks originally used as gun mountings in Yaverland Battery, to the north-east of Sandown: it is indeed "well placed on a platform above the beach" (Lloyd and Pevsner 255). Although not listed nationally, the memorial is considered a structure of local importance. The unveiling ceremony was attended by thousands (see "Memorials and Monuments").
