Given that both women are fashionably dressed, this cartoon doesn’t work at that well. Its main interest lies in the women’s clothing and the fact that by the end of the nineteenth century women had their own private clubs. Judy is a conservative humor magazine, and it depicts a man, rather than a woman, as the club secretary. — George P. Landow
