This commemorative plate for Isambard Kingdom Brunel from the 1859 Harper's Weekly: A Journal of Civilization surrounds his portrait by his stupendous engineering achievements, including the Saltash Bridge, and the steamships Great Western, Great Britain, and Great Eastern. Note how this symbolic portrait of an engineer, whom Lord Clark in Civilisation describes as the hero of the industrial age, follows the same pattern used in posthumous portraits of Dickens.
