“This is an ‘up-brow,’ or full ‘tub,’ on its way to the shaft. The men who push these ‘tubs’ sometimes hurry along the loads with wonderful rapidity, with back and arms outstretched in a perfectly horizontal direction, the back narrowly escaping contact with the low roof. In the sketch the bar under which the man is passing is shown as nearly broken through by the weight above; but such bars often remain for so long a time without actually giving way, and they are frequently met with wherever there is a ‘tender’ roof. In the more roomy passages, especuialy where there are steep inclines, ponies are employed to draw the ‘tubs’ of coal” (319).
