.“The collier is here disputing with the underlooker of the mine regarding the amount of work which he has done in the past fortnight, the officer having visited his working to take the measurement. On the left of the sketch is a ‘brattice cloth’ by means of which the ventilation of the working is effected, the air travelling inwards along one side of it, and returning along the other, where the rails are seen” (319).
