ictorian Periodicals Review (VPR), the journal of the Research Society for Victorian Periodicals, invites submissions for its two annual essay prizes. Each prize includes a cash award of $500 and publication in an upcoming issue of VPR.
Submissions for both prizes are due by June 15, 2025, and should be sent to the editor of VPR (vpr@rs4vp.org). Submission guidelines can be found using the links below:
- The VanArsdel Prize is awarded to the best graduate student essay investigating any aspect of Victorian newspapers or periodicals. Established in 1990 to honor RSVP founding member Rosemary VanArsdel, the prize recognizes original research that contributes meaningfully to the field of nineteenth-century periodical studies.
- The VPR Expanding the Field Prize recognizes an outstanding essay that broadens the geographic, racial, or ethnic scope of nineteenth-century periodical studies. Essays may center BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) editors, contributors, or readers; interrogate Anglocentric frameworks; enact anti-racist or anti-colonial approaches; or consider the global impact of British imperial print culture.
Please feel free to share this announcement with graduate students and colleagues engaged in 19th-century periodical studies and related fields! For questions, please contact the editor of Victorian Periodicals Review, Katherine Malone.
