Study of Kneeling Young Woman. Pencil on white paper. 9 1/2 by 6 1/2 inches (24.1 x 16.5 cm). Collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, accession no. Circ.80-1958, given by Mr. Ralph Edwards, F.S.A. Image courtesy ©Victoria and Albert Museum, London. [Click on the image to enlarge it.]
This is a study of a kneeling young woman in profile whose dress has slipped off her right shoulder exposing her right breast. She is looking upwards, wears a cap on her head and a necklace made up of round stones. This drawing does not seem to relate to any known painting. Such kneeling figures were not unknown in Strudwick’s art, however. This pose is particularly close to the figure of the Virgin Mary in The Annunciation or the kneeling man in the far-right panel of Love’s Music.
