A typical pose in Stokes's oeuvre, that of the demure young woman, her eyes cast down in devotion, or perhaos simply in total absorption in her task, her hair drawn back and neatly framing her face — there is nothing here of the Pre-Raphaelite "stunner" with her rippling, luxuriant hair and sensuality. Magdalen Evans comments on the "distinctive sharp profile" which can be seen in other works by Stokes as well (86).
