Commentary by Paul Crowther

During 1859, Hunt and his wife travelled in the Rhine for reasons connected with her health. She remained in Germany, and Hunt rejoined her the following summer, when they journeyed in the Moselle valley. Hunt did another view—Cochem on the Moselle: Steamboat Approaching Landing Place (Hunt 215). The present view also shows a view of the town that is clearly done from a river vantage point. It seems likely, therefore, that it too was done on the steamboat, but before reaching the landing place. Restoration work on the ruined castle in the picture began in 1866.
