The original was one of four paintings by Gale shown at the Royal Academy that year, and the Art-Journal critic, James Dafforne, considered it the "most prominent" (374). [Commentary continues below.]

Dafforne explains that Blind Bartimeus was then owned by Thomas E. Walker, Esq., of Thistle Grove, Brompton, who had granted permission for the engraving to be made from it. "The group is skilfully arranged," he adds, "while the face of the young girl is an eloquent appeal on behalf of her afflicted parent. The draperies are painted in n remarkably rich tone of colour; and the quality of light, as expressed on the massive walls of Jericho, is well maintained" (374).
