Zandvoort Fishergirl

Elizabeth Adela Forbes (1859-1912)

1884

H 68 x W 53.5 cm

Collection: Penlee House Gallery and Museum, Penzance

Accession no: NELNG: 1991.1

The artist found much to interest her in the little fishing village near Haarlem in the Netherlands. This simple figure, a fishergirl with a shallow bowl of fish at her hip, has her own pride and dignity, as she gazes directly at the viewer. The subdued tones bring out the fresh colour of her face: Forbes captures her beauty perfectly.
