Commentary by Paul Crowther
The exact date and location represented in the picture was subsequently identified by Paul Crowther, and confirmed independently (soon after) in a letter from the artist's great-grandson Charles Brett. Between 1865 and 1896, Brett and his family spent a considerable amount of time in Wales, and, in 1886, he purchased Windy Hall Farm in Fishguard—eventually selling it in 1896. During the 1890s Brett's career took a downward turn, and, as well as selling his Welsh property, he also vacated his studio in Harley Street London to work from home in Putney.
