Beachy Head

Wilfrid Ball, RBA, RE (1853-1917)

c. 1906

Watercolour

Ball, facing p. 178

Ball writes, "the Chalk Downs run into the sea ... and are cut off, in sharp white cliffs all along Seaford Bay, in a face of white precipice which culminates at Beachy Head" (10-11). Ball has shown both the beauty and the drama of the headland, a favourite beauty spot and viewing point on the south coast near Eastbourne. But it is dangerous, and unfortunately well known for both accidents and suicides.
